John B went up a mountain to show his support: "Mount POW/MIA is a mountain that was dedicated in November of 1999 to any military personnel that have ever been determined as a Prisoner of War or been Missing In Action. This mountain can easily be seen from the Matanuska-Susitna Veterans Memorial...At the summit there is a POW/MIA flag, register, and plaque dedicated to James Wesley Widdis, Jr. Northwest of the summit, about 100 feet, if there is little or no snow, is a picnic table for picnicking pleasure."

Elisha C used Memorial Day weekend to reflect on her service to our country: "My name is Elisha and I currently live in Omaha, NE. The photo I am sending is one I took today of my Air Force uniform hanging on the back of a chair, with a picture of an eagle with a flag hanging on the wall in the background. I have been in the military for almost six years now, and in just a month, I will be separated and no longer wearing this uniform. I am proud to have called myself an Airman in the USAF and am thankful for those who served before me, with me, and those who will serve after me."

It's Impossible to Chase Someone Who Isn't Running

"It's physically impossible to chase someone who isn't running." This is my standard response to a student who comes barreling down the school hallway because so-and-so is chasing him. Today, I issued that same comment to a wildly running seventh grader, and I got the same look I always get, the lightbulb slowly coming on.

I had already intended to address the media's obsession with Governor Palin's "One Nation" bus tour, but no sooner had those words to the student come out of my mouth when a lightbulb came on for me.

It's impossible to chase someone who isn't running. I've uttered those words in reprimand to students for years. Have I been wrong all along? Well, if I believe the political talking heads, indeed I have. If I listen to the Bill O'Reillys, the Dick Morrises, the Charles Krauthammers of the world, Governor Palin isn't running for President, for she doesn't have what it takes. I reject that perspective, of course, as common sense Americans do. However, let's just say, for the sake of argument, that they are correct and she's not going to run. Why, then, is she being chased? Nay, why is the media literally stalking her as she and her family are enjoying the historical sites of this great country? They're checking into hotels she's staying at, they're engaging in what are essentially high speed chases down the highways, and they're lurking overhead in helicopters.

Governor Palin has repeatedly said this tour is not a campaign tour. She's proving wrong those who claim that she's simply looking for attention; she hasn't even released her travel schedule. She's not setting up a microphone and making prepared speeches to a plethora of gatherers. She's simply taking in the richness of America's history, and the media can't get enough. So here's a private citizen who's on a family vacation, one might say, and media members are underfoot--and overhead. Yet their narrative is that she's totally irrelevant, unable to lead this country, and has no intentions to run. Why don't they go chase the other people then, the ones who are running? Why not stick microphones in their faces, ask them if they're playing with their heads, and tweet incessantly about their next move?

If I believe some of these so-called experts and these masters of the lamestream media who, according to their own imaginations, know everything about everything, Governor Palin is simply a passing fad, unfit for leadership, and certainly not running for President. It seems after fifteen years of teaching, it might be time for me to find something new to respond when one student is running down the hallway, saying, "He's chasing me!" My traditional "It's physically impossible to chase someone who isn't running" has been flat-out debunked by those who, supposedly, know better than the rest of us.

New Afghanistan Development Dangerous to NATO

Governor Palin today posted on Facebook:




After learning this afternoon of Afghan President Karzai’s ultimatum to NATO concerning airstrikes, we need to consider how dangerous this new development is. While it's always devastating to hear about civilians killed in the fight against the Taliban, President Karzai surely knows that no one works harder to eliminate civilian casualties than NATO. His public ultimatum issued today to allies and supposed friends is dangerous. What President Karzai is saying is that if we don’t severely limit our air campaign he will take “unilateral action.” And he further says that if the airstrikes continue we will be seen as an “occupying” power. This is an indirect way of saying that American and NATO forces will be fair game, which is obviously an unacceptable situation that threatens our troops. His comments reflect the reality that there is a growing divide between NATO and the Karzai government. Let us be clear: we are in Afghanistan fighting for the Afghan people and for the security of our country and our allies. If President Karzai continues with these public ultimatums, we must consider our options about the immediate future of U.S. troops in his country. If he actually follows through on his claim that Afghan forces will take “unilateral action” against NATO forces who conduct such air raids to take out terrorists and terrorist positions, that should result in the immediate withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan and the suspension of U.S. aid. I still firmly support our mission in Afghanistan, but we must have the support of the host government. Our troops’ mission will be compromised and their safety endangered if the Afghan government threatens us.

You Won’t Be Able to Make Things Up This Time

Sarah Palin is playing out a brilliant cat and mouse game with the media. She tells Greta Van Susteren tonight that she has no obligation to do it the media's way. If she chooses to speak with reporters, it will be at times of her choosing. She wants reporters to dig – to do their homework – if they want to find out where she is going on her bus tour. She is making them do the work this time, playing a strategic game where she builds suspense and gets the media to focus on the who, what, where, when and why of her tour.

This would leave the media with little time to discuss (or should I say smear) her family since the family would be with her. Instead, she’s having fun with the press. She’s throwing them off guard rather than allowing them to throw her off guard. The relationship that Sarah Palin will have with the media will be on her terms from now on.


This is not a guarded strategy designed to micro manage the governor’s image to create a picture of someone who she is not. This is an open strategy designed to allow the governor to be who she really is. By forcing the media to stay focused on the facts in both what she says and where she goes, Palin leaves the media little room for fabrication.

Will they still fabricate? Of course they will. Are some in the media using this strategy as a way to use pretzel logic to push the idea that since she is not providing traditional access to the media that she will be unable to get the nomination because of that? Yes, but this is where they play into her hand.

Who are among this arrogant media that says she can’t get the nomination because she will not appear at press conferences of their choosing, appear on network shows of their choosing, be interviewed by people of their choosing or have people of their choosing ride on the bus with you? The trap is set. When those who pop their heads into the “scope” by trying to complain that Palin isn’t playing by the rules, they will be the first ones who will be spotted and framed as arrogant elites.

If this was a military campaign and strategists were leaning over a map of Obamaville to try to determine the best course of action, all fingers would be on the outer perimeter, a staunchly fortified ring of media people who make up the first line of defense in getting to Obama. Break through this line of defense and you win the presidency.

The Call at Gettysburg

When I first visited Gettysburg years ago, I was overwhelmed with the sense of sacrifice made to secure our union, but my most recent visit this morning was even more significant as subsequent visits allow reflection on the state of our union today. Striking to me is how ready and willing troops and civilians were in 1863 to lay their lives on the line. Are we as ready and willing to accept the call for sacrifice today in order to keep our union secure?

Hopefully the kids on school field trips whom we met this morning grasped the poignant irony at the site we toured together: that such a beautiful stretch of the Pennsylvania countryside should have been the site of the bloodiest battle in the Civil War. But perhaps it’s fitting that such a sacred place should be so beautiful now in order to commemorate the terrible sacrifices made to bring about, in the words of Lincoln’s famous address, "a new birth of freedom."

But this "new birth of freedom" wasn’t fully realized by the generation that paid the price for it. Over 100 years after the battle, Martin Luther King, Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and declared, "Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children." It took the struggle for Civil Rights to truly complete what Lincoln called "the unfinished work" for which the heroes of Gettysburg "gave the last full measure of devotion."

Today, when we speak of "fundamentally restoring all that is good in America", we remember the debt of gratitude we owe to those who sacrificed to create and preserve our union. From the Civil War to the struggle for Civil Rights, generations of Americans have made great sacrifices necessary to pass on to us this great gift of freedom. It’s our duty to them to preserve it, cherish it, and pass it on to our children, so "that these dead shall not have died in vain…and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

When duty calls, are we willing to answer today? Please remember that freedom isn't free - the price paid for our liberty has been great.

The reminders of the past costs are seen at Gettysburg. The way forward in protecting our unified body is encapsulated in Lincoln's 2nd inaugural address: "...with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds."

Greetings from the road in Maryland!

Mount Vernon was amazing, really something special.

I’ve said before that George Washington is my favorite Founding Father because he was reluctant to serve, and yet he rose to the great challenges before him. I can certainly see why he dreaded leaving his home on the Potomac. His servant's heart is an inspiration to us all.

When Piper laid the wreath at George Washington's tomb this afternoon, I wished that every American school student could be here to see and feel the spirit of our nation's first father. Even Piper was able to grasp the significance of being in the presence of our first President - who had such diverse interests - when she told me later "how hard he must have worked to keep that farm going!" And then she added, "And can you believe he was a commercial fisherman, from DC?!"

There's so much to learn and absorb at Mt. Vernon. Washington was a very busy man who had a healthy reluctance to serve as President after having dedicated so many precious years in service to others while he lead the military. When he accepted the call to be our nation's first chief executive, he served for the right reasons. Though he loved his home at Mt. Vernon so much, this self-taught, "non politician" was willing to sacrifice his passion for farming, fishing, trade and commerce in order to answer another call of to lead the new nation.

Visiting Washington's home today with fellow citizens from all across the country, including Maryland, Oklahoma, Michigan, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Idaho reminds us of our common bond. That bond can be summed up in Washington's prayer that you can find at his tomb. It reads in part, "I now make it my earnest prayer, that God would have the United States in his holy protection...to dispose us all to do Justice, to love mercy...which were the Characteristics of the Devine Author of our blessed Religion, and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy Nation. Amen." (June 8, 1783)

And amen!

I encourage every American to travel east to Mt. Vernon. Beautiful. Educational. Inspiring. Worth it. And the caretakers and tour guides there are superb. They're so proud that the estate, museum and gardens are privately operated and funded. Their patience with visitors and care for Washington's land and possessions is a testament to their passion for restoring a part of America's strong foundation. Their conscientious work is another reason to be proud to be American!

Our Charters of Liberty at the National Archives

On this tour, when I speak of "fundamentally restoring our country", that means restoring it to the ideals found in our charters of liberty. What a great morning we just had seeing the collection of these founding documents at the National Archives!

Seeing America's most historic documents is inspiring, and speaking with staff members who pour their hearts into educating visitors gives us great hope that our nation's history will be accurately passed on to future generations. Many of the artifacts, recordings and documents on display at the National Archives are evidence of the patriotism and hard work poured into our foundation. These are nonpartisan, valuable historical tools we all need to see, read and absorb to learn the truth about our past, so we can move forward successfully.

Too often our leaders today behave as if our charters of liberty are outdated, flawed documents from a distant and irrelevant past. They treat our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution as if they aren't much more than old pieces of parchment with pretty words that can be twisted or ignored when it’s convenient. But these can’t be ignored! They point the way forward, like a needed compass that can guide us through the heady times we face as a country. These documents unite us! We ARE one nation under God, and we're indivisible if we follow the blueprints our Founders drew for us.

Amazing visit! Thank you, National Archives.

Memorial Day is the ideal time to take a look at America today, a look at America’s days gone by, and a look into America’s days to come.

Today we are called upon once again to solve the challenges, the problems, and the trials facing our country.

As Americans we are free to take the initiative, to strike, and to use our vision and our talents to solve America’s problems on our own.

This freedom has been given to us by our country’s women and men in uniform who have served our nation and our nation’s interests abroad.

Specifically, we are beholden to those who have died so that we may remain free.

Our legacy of freedom is both durable and delicate. Current events across the globe call attention to the truth that our Liberty is scarce, and our America is exceptional.

This Memorial Day 2011 Organize4Palin California would like to pay homage and give glory to the fearless heroic Americans who gave all serving their country.

Let us show respect and appreciation for their sacrifice. Let us restore our boldness and decidedness against our aggressors. Let us renew our wisdom to defend and secure our freedoms; and let us revive our spirit of helpful understanding to champion enduring harmony all over the World.

George Will Plays Political Genetics and Endocrinology Professor on ABC's "This Week"

Today on ABC's "This Week", George Will, as is common for him, chose to provide unsubstantiated and disparaging remarks on Governor Palin's potential presidential run. When asked if she is going to run for President, Will first replied:
Two things are infinite. One is the expanding universe, and the other is media attention to Sarah Palin, who's a genius at manipulating it. She has several political problems, the first of which is there's no undecided vote in this country anymore about Sarah Palin, surely.
Governor Palin manipulates the media attention? Really? To be sure, the media is fixated on every move Governor Palin makes, but to assert that Governor Palin manipulates media coverage is a false. Unlike with other potential candidates, the media has become fixed on the minutiae of Governor Palin's life and their own created "nontroversies", not the substance of her policies stances or her record. When Governor Palin made a humanitarian trip to Haiti, the media made the trip about the fact that she had a "hair stylist" (aka Bristol Palin)when she was there.When Governor Palin chose to attend today's Rolling Thunder rally in Washington D.C. at the request of a retired Rolling Thunder board member, the media asserted that she had not been invited. When she laid out a serious 5 point "Palin Doctrine" about the proper use of military force, the media focused on her reference to President Obama as "our president", rather than calling using his last name in her reference. Governor Palin does not manipulate the media; the media misrepresents her.

Will also asserts that Governor Palin has "several political problems", but he only chooses to list one--a rather weak one at that. Will asserts that too many people have already made their mind up about Governor Palin, and there is no changing it. Well, that settles that! Governor Palin and all other candidates and potential candidates can fly home.There's no need to waste time over the next year to visit states, meet voters, and give speeches! George Will has spoken. No debates are needed for candidates juxtapose their positions and records against one another. People will not change their mind about Tina Fey Governor Palin. That's just it. That is what campaigns are for to help the undecideds make up their minds and to hopefully change the minds of those in disagreement.With Governor Palin, so many people have made their decision based upon a media caricature of her. So few know that she cut spending in Alaska by more than 9% and that Alaska has a $12 billiion surplus now due in large part to her policies, but people think that she can see Russia from her house. Correcting the misconceptions, setting the record straight, and controlling the message on one's own terms is what a political campaign is all about. In Iowa next month and throughout the country in the coming months, a film depicting the truth about Governor Palin's record and resignation will premiere, providing her with a opportunity to address the caricature, lies, and misrepresentations.

Should she chose to make an official campaign, she will control her own message, something she could not do as part of the McCain campaign, and will be able to juxtapose her record and stances against that of the other candidates. Will conveniently leaves out the fact that Governor Palin is within the margin of error as the front runner for the GOP nomination for President, and more than one in five GOP voters do not have an opinion yet on who should be the nominee for President. That kind of blows a hole in Will's assertion, does it not?

Will's most egregious claim comes in his next statement:
Second, the threshold question. It's not usually asked, but it's in everyone's mind in a presidential election. Should we give this person nuclear weapons? And the answer is -- answers itself there. That doesn't mean she can't be without political consequence.

George Will's hollow argument becomes that Governor Palin--that capricious, empty headed woman-- is simply incapable of handling military power responsibly. By his assertion, that question is so obvious that it answers itself. As usual, there is nothing to back it up. Why does Will think Governor Palin is incapable? Because her highest office was at the state level as governor? Surely not, as that would render Governors Romney, Pawlenty, Johnson, and Roemer incapable too. It must be noted that in addition to serving as the commander-in-chief of the Alaska National Guard, Governor Palin also served as the official commander of the Alaska State Defense Force (also known as the 49th Readiness Brigade).This is a group of volunteers, often retired military personnel, who supplement the National Guard's work, which sometimes involves assisting in homeland security and FBI activities. Only 24 states have such defense forces, and Minnesota, New Mexico and Mississippi are among those who do not, meaning someone like Governor Pawlenty has less "experience" than Governor Palin. It also means that someone like Bill Clinton also had less "experience" along those lines than Governor Palin had.

Will's assertion likely lies in something more along the lines of Governor Palin's genetic makeup, rather than her political experience. That's right. People who have a pair of X chromosomes, instead of a X and a Y chromosome can simply not be trusted with such information, in his mind. That extra X chromosome, or estrogen, must give female politicians some uncontrollable urge to press the proverbial red button without consultation or hesitation, according to professor of political genetics and endocrinology, George Will. This has been a common assertion American politics.When Geraldine Ferraro ran for Vice President in 1984, it was asserted that there might be a time when she may have to push the proverbial button to fire missiles, but she might not be able to if she's just done her nails. Of course, in 2008 as well, sexism was used as a political weapon against both then candidate Hillary Clinton and Governor Palin especially when it came to foreign policy. George Will gives no reasoning as to why he feels that Governor Palin is not to be trusted with the responsibility of the America's nuclear arsenal. There is no reason whatsoever to think that Governor Palin would make a flippant decision about America's nuclear arms--whether in deploying them, converting them, or destroying them.Meanwhile, we have a president who signed a treaty with Russia that allows them to move nuclear weapons closer to America's NATO allies and does not allow America to convert nuclear systems to conventional systems and who seems to not be serious about addressing Iran's nuclear program. Those are both issues of great concern that Governor Palin has addressed. Governor Palin would not handle America's nuclear weaponry with carelessness, but she would address the potential of enemies' nuclear arsenal with seriousness, unlike President Obama.

George Will was, however, magnanimous enough to say that Governor Palin still is of political consequence. How generous! Perhaps she can become a Republican cheerleader when it comes to nuclear and national defense. It would give whole new meaning to the "D-E-F-E-N-S-E" cheer often shouted at sporting events, would it not? However, as Nicole and myself have written, Governor Palin is a point guard, and you do not ask a point guard to become a cheerleader. Governor Palin has often noted that such criticisms and underestimations only give fuel to the fire in her belly. Governor Palin will choose her political path; it will not be chosen for her by the ostrich-like pundocracy. Needless to say, it is the "We the People's" Will not George Will that will ultimately determine the results of the upcoming primary and general elections.
